Sorry We Were Late Getting You This Notice About Punctuality

This just in. The Peruvian government decided to crack down on lateness at work. Apparently it’s a big problem. (You can read the AP wire at: http://www.wtop.com/?nid=389&sid=1068230) But, according to NPR the officials were thirty minutes late for the press conference to announce the plan.

I love it. . . But what’s this got to do with change? It has to do with credibility. You have heard the tired old expression, walk the talk. That’s what people want us to do. Delivering an announcement about tardiness thirty minutes late – no matter what the excuse – sends the message that this change is not really all that important.

For those of us who work on organizational changes – leaders, managers, team members, and consultants – we have to be ever mindful of places where our actions contradict our words. Because each time we err, our believability and credibility goes down. . . Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m late for a meeting.
